True or False: Wired Charging Will Absolutely Give Way to Wireless Charging?

It’s very likely that one who has tried the wireless charging may be soon fascinated by this convenient technology. And it will be a really cool experience because it’s good to get rid of those annoying cables. So you can put your smartphone down on the tablet and recharge it while you drink a coffee.

News came that the future will be an era of wireless charging. So here comes the question: Will wireless charging completely take the place of wired charging? In order to get a clear answer of this “True-or-False” question, Unite Cable Enterprise Co., Ltd has summarized both the merits and demerits of wireless charging for evaluation.

Advantages:

l  Can be more convenient - no need for cables.

l  Durability – Without the need to constantly plug and unplug the device, there is significantly less wear and tear on the socket of the device and the attaching cable.

l  Protected connections – no corrosion when the electronics are all enclosed, away from water or oxygen in the atmosphere.

l  Safer for medical implants – for embedded medical devices, allows recharging/powering through the skin rather than having wires penetrate the skin, which would increase the risk of infection.

Disadvantages:

To be honest, the technology is potential enough to dominate the future market. Obviously, the wired technology will always give way to the wireless technology. However, as for wireless charging, it may be hardly reached because of various obstacles. Cool alone is insufficient to make difference.

1.   Not so Convenient

As is known to all, the most attractive feature of wireless charging is its convenience. As a matter of fact, in some degree, it’s not so convenient.

Wireless charging is immediately appealing because it allows you to charge your smartphone without fiddling with USB plugs. Just place the smartphone on a wireless charger and it will start charging. Of course, the wireless charger itself must still be plugged into the wall. The requirement for a separate device that must be plugged into the wall has led Apple’s Phil Schiller to argue that wireless charging “is actually, for most situations, more complicated” — which is why the iPhone hasn’t adopted wireless charging.

       2.   Not so durable

Also, it’s not so durable to some degree. There is no need to constantly plug and unplug the device, which has satisfied a lot of people. Nevertheless, we forget to consider the charging speed which we always put on the first place.

At the very beginning, the charging speed of a wireless charger is not that fast, due to the lower efficiency. Then, the problems come. Devices take longer and longer to charge when supplied power is the same amount, in that this way of charging requires the use of magnetism and the magnetism will be weaken with time going by.

       3.   Not so Safe

Thanks to its simplicity and scalability, electromagnetic induction is the technology of choice among many of the remaining companies in the wireless-charging arena. However, the side effect of electromagnetism still remains unsolved. That is the hazardous effects of electromagnetic radiation.

During a golden age of scientific advancement, it’s a big problem because radiation is everywhere. But it will never be considered as a small problem. It needs to be solved one day.

       4.   Not so Economical

On the one hand, inductive charging requires drive electronics and coils in both device and charger, increasing the complexity and cost of manufacturing. Therefore, without any doubt, the solution will be more expensive.

On the other hand, because of its Lower efficiency, heat wasting, it will increase resistive heating in comparison to direct contact. From what has been mentioned above, it’s clear that the technology is not economical enough.

The position of wireless charging will never be ignored. Undoubtedly, it will be a tendency in this era. But it still has a long way to go. What’s more, wired charging is unable to be replaced. The two ways of charging have its own superiorities and will coexist in harmony in the future.
